Black Excellence Day – May 15

Honouring Black Excellence

On Wednesday, May 15, Sycamore Lane Elementary will proudly celebrate Black Excellence Day—a day dedicated to honouring the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black Canadians, with a special focus on African Nova Scotians.

Throughout the day, students and staff will engage in enriching classroom activities, explore stories by Black authors, and learn about inspiring figures who have shaped our province and country. This celebration is an opportunity to reflect on the past, recognize the present, and envision a future where every voice is heard and valued.

We encourage everyone to wear black clothing as a symbol of solidarity and to honor the legacy and future of Black excellence in our community and beyond.

"Black history is not just for Black people—Black history is Canadian history."
Jean Augustine, first Black Canadian woman elected to Parliament

Let's come together to celebrate the rich tapestry of our shared history and continue building an inclusive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and celebrated.
